Six Books that I’m Obsessed With

As readers, we have a select number of books that we cannot get over. No matter how many good books we read, our favorites will always come back to comfort us. I am grateful for my favorite books because they lift me when I feel down. They remind me of my values and inspirations. I originally was going to do my top five, but I couldn’t make up my mind, so you all are getting six!

In this article, I will give you short descriptions of my six favorite books/series. These will not be in any particular order. They are all five-star books, in my opinion, and I thank the authors every day for displaying their works of art.

1. Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

taken by goodreads.com

Priory is an excellent 900-page book with dragons and sapphic romance. It looks overwhelming to start, but if you genuinely enjoy the story, you’ll want to stay inside the book for eternity. The story switches perspectives between four people with different struggles, pasts, and feelings.

One kingdom despises dragons, and the other reveres them. After 1000 years, the Nameless One will rise again to lay waste to the world. All realms need to work together to banish the Nameless One and figure out who summoned the ancient dragon in the first place.

  • I adore the characters and their relationships with each other.
  • The world that Shannon creates is diverse and stunning when I imagine it.
  • The plot isn’t unique, but I never got bored.

2. Shadow of the Fox trilogy by Julie Kagawa

taken by me

This trilogy takes place in feudal Japan, involving mythology coming to life. Yumeko is a kitsune who was raised by monks. One day, a demon comes to their home and destroys it and everyone inside. Yumeko is tasked with delivering a piece of an ancient scroll to a hidden temple.

She meets various people along the way, including a stone-cold samurai, a suave disgraced samurai, a prince, and a priestess. Each scroll piece was scattered across the land, and every 1000 years, someone can read from the scroll and summon a dragon. This dragon will grant one wish, then disappear for another 1000 years.

  • Again, I love the characters so much
  • the mythology is fascinating and whimsical
  • great found family trope
  • features my favorite trope of all time: a human teaching a non-human how to feel emotions and love, appreciate the beauty of the world, and learn to live.

3. The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare

taken from amazon.com

I’ve been obsessed with this series since I was 14. The Infernal Devices is the prequel trilogy of Cassandra Clare’s first series, The Mortal Instruments. It features Tessa Gray, an American girl kidnapped and transported to England in the late 19th century. She finds out she’s a warlock and teams up with a group of Shadowhunters, a cross between a human and an angel.

She develops attachments to Will Herondale, a mysterious and sarcastic Shadowhunter, and Jem Carstairs, a sweet and thoughtful boy suffering from a demon’s curse. Someone is creating robots that are causing a stir. It’s up to Tessa and her friends to figure out what’s going on.

  • The relationship between Will, Tessa, and Jem! (they should have been in a poly relationship, in my opinion)
  • I’ve loved the Shadowhunter world since I was young
  • the plot was okay. I’m here for all the characters though
  • my favorite trope is in here too!

4. The Conquerors Saga by Kirsten White

taken from amazon.com

The Conquerors Saga is a retelling of Vlad the Impaler. In this story, Vlad is a girl named Lada, born in Wallachia and grew up in the Ottoman Empire. Lada’s father neglected her and her brother Radu and eventually sold them to the Ottoman Empire because he was in debt. Lada is a very unlikeable character who stops at nothing to take her country back.

Radu has his journey and tries to figure out his relationship with religion and sexuality. Throughout the trilogy, Lada and Radu have the choice to pick power or pick people. Their choices will decide the trajectory of their lives, and they have to live with the consequences.

  • I love that Lada is so unlikeable and stops at nothing to get what she wants.
  • Radu and his development is my favorite part of the book.
  • the writing is beautiful

5. The Tenth Muse by Catherine Chung

taken from goodreads.com

Next, we have The Tenth Muse. I love this book so much that I want to get a tattoo of a quote. It’s the life of an Asian-American woman who is a math prodigy. She dedicates her life to solving the Riemann Hypothesis.

You learn lessons from her mistakes and what it means to live your life. She teaches you what is the most important and that you will have limitations.

“Since then she has told a thousand stories, she has lived a hundred million lives. She is born again in every generation: Sappho. Hypatia. Scheherazade. Woolf. And all the rest unhailed, unnamed, erased. Returning and returning, she is the tale embodied. Long may she live, again.”

6. An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

taken from goodreads.com

Lastly, this book is my perfect fairytale. Basically, this girl paints a portrait of one of the high fae, and she depicted mortal sorrow in his eyes. It could cost him his title. He takes the girl to his world to stand on trial for her crimes, but there is a sudden attack, and they are forced to become allies. Their relationship blossoms, and they work together to get rid of the evil surrounding the fair forest.

  • favorite trope alert
  • The story is simple and whimsical. There aren’t any out-of-left-field solutions at the end, and the whole tale is thematic and beautiful.
  • This is my comfort book when I feel sick of reality.
  • You can easily predict the ending, but I love it because it keeps the original lesson of the story consistent.

Thank you for listening to me gush about my stories! I recommend checking these books out. The link to their Goodreads profiles are below:
